The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute is situated in an academic setting recognized for the quality of its students. CGBI carries out three main tasks: research, service, and training. Our research is centered around the three "B"s - breastfeeding, birth spacing, and birth. Our service includes the expert testimony of our faculty and staff, committee support, and advocacy on the state, national, and international levels. Our primary activity is training the future of our profession. We strive to provide our students with a variety of learning opportunities in public health and breastfeeding, from research to clinical training. In addition, CGBI offers an annual scholarship to support a student with potential for leadership in mother/child health, especially as related to infant and young child feeding and care.
The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI) is part of the Department of Maternal and Child Health in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. CGBI also serves as a component of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Sexual and Reproductive Health. Our goals are training the future generation, ensuring breastfeeding-friendly health care practices, “filling the gaps” through research, publication and technical assistance, and providing access to communications and tools for replication of successful programs and policies.
