Purpose of CGBI’s educational activities:

The purpose of CGBI’s educational activities is to complement UNC students’ departmental studies by offering courses, seminars, and research projects/internships that provide for a comprehensive understanding of breastfeeding in public health.  The expectation is that this coursework will increase the number and quality of public health professionals available to design, develop, and implement programs and services to help breastfeeding families achieve their feeding goals and those goals set by health organizations and governments.  National and state trend data illustrate the urgency for additional health professionals’ support of breastfeeding.

Objectives of the coursework:

1. Students will gain knowledge in public health practice and research as it pertains to breastfeeding, the cornerstone of maternal and child health and the reproductive health continuum.

2. Students will learn about policies, programs, and practices that contribute to and hinder the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding.

3. Students will apply principles and practices to gain skill and proficiency.
