Physician training
"The Physicians' Role in Breastfeeding Support:
Essential Clinical and Policy Issues."

An eight-hour course for physicians, by physicians and mid-level care providers, based on the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine's "What Every Physician Needs to Know to Implement the 10 Steps"
Overview

Why Breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding prevents maternal and child morbidity and mortality by decreasing the risk of maternal and child diabetes and cancers as well as myriad preventable pediatric conditions with high prevalence in NC, including obesity, diarrhea, hospitalizations for pneumonia, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and necrotising enterocolitis. In North Caroina, only 67% initiate breastfeeding, and 9.5% breastfeed exclusively to six months as advised by the AAP and WHO. Populations with the highest rates of these preventable diseases, people from lower socio-economic groups, younger mothers, and African Americans, also have the lowest breastfeeding rates. Breastfeeding initiation among low-income NC women is only 30%. CBI research shows that improvements in hospital-based breastfeeding support could prevent 50+ infant deaths in NC annually, mostly among financially needy families. This training will enable North Carolina's physicians to improve breastfeeding rates, decrease inequities in health, and reduce illness, especially among financially needy women and children.

Why Physicians and Mid-Levels?

Because your patients need you! There is strong evidence to suggest that many mothers believe that stronger support from their healthcare providers would have helped them achieve their breastfeeding goals. Moreover, the research suggests that very well-meaning physicians lack the skills and knowledge they need to support their patients in optimal infant feeding. This training is designed for physicians, by physicians. It is specifically targeted to your responsibilities as primary care providers, and formatted in a way that you are accustomed to learning.

Any interested physician or mid-level is welcome to attend. However, it is mostly highly recommended for obstetricians, pediatricians, maternal-fetal medicine, family practice and others who care for the maternal-child population.
