The UNC Office of Human Resources has a Lactation Support policy that offers guidelines to help UNC departments implement the provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. These guidelines, which apply to all permanent and temporary UNC employees, guide departments to “assist working mothers with the transition back to work following the birth of a child” by allowing them to “express breastmilk periodically during the work day.” This requires that the university provides:
- space: a place other than a restroom or other common area with adequate lighting and seating, and electrical outlets for pumping equipment;
- privacy: a room with a door that can be secured or locked; and
- time: the use of regularly scheduled paid break time or, when possible, paid leave or unpaid time to express breast milk.
Nursing mothers are responsible for the storage of their expressed milk. A list of the existing lactation resources can be found here. Employees who have questions or need additional information can contact their department’s HR Facilitator or Benefits Consultant.
